The Fragmentation Method in Western Science: An Achievement in Dividing Crises, Not Solving Them

If we reflect on the history of science in the West, we find that its greatest intellectual achievement was not the discovery of any particular theory, nor the invention of any specific technology, but rather a particular method of dealing with scientific problems: breaking a major crisis into small parts, assigning each part to a separate discipline, and then addressing each part in isolation from the whole. This method, which appears on the surface to be a sign of scientific progress and intellectual depth, is essentially an escape from confronting fundamental questions and a reliance on quick, superficial solutions that do not treat the disease but merely manage its symptoms.
First: Intellectual Fragmentation — A Distinctively Western Legacy
Since the emergence of modernity, the West has moved from the “Polymath” model, which brought different sciences together, to the model of the “specialist,” who sees little beyond his own field. This transformation was not merely an academic development; it was also an epistemological strategy aimed at transforming major existential questions into smaller technical problems that could be controlled within narrow laboratories.
Reductionism in its various forms—epistemological and theoretical—is the backbone of this approach. Epistemological reductionism reduces a complex phenomenon to a basic unit, treating an individual part as though it explains the whole. Theoretical reductionism subordinates one discipline to another, dissolving the independence of fields of knowledge under the pressure of borrowed methodologies.
This is what some critics call the “Fragmentation of Knowledge,” a phenomenon that has led to the loss of a holistic vision and transformed academic fields into isolated islands that neither communicate with one another nor possess the ability to understand one another.
Second: Testimonies from Within the Western System
This criticism does not come only from opponents of the West. It is also a cry raised by major Western thinkers themselves, who have discovered that this method has become a tool for obstructing deep thinking:
1. Mary Midgley: A Warning Against Destructive Specialization
The British philosopher Mary Midgley asks a striking question: “Can specialization be harmful to your health?” She compares the specialized researcher to creatures imagined by the writer H. G. Wells, raised in glass jars, with each creature developing one organ at the expense of all the others, eventually becoming deformed and incapable of integrated life.
Midgley directs her criticism toward the “obsession with specialization” and the intellectual fragmentation that follows from it. She warns that this obsession has affected not only the experimental sciences but also philosophy and theology, to the point that philosophy itself has become divided between continental and analytic traditions, as though one barely knows the other.
This division, she argues, leaves our world drowning in an excess of information without a unified vision—something that resembles the crisis of the digital age, a crisis whose existence is hardly disputed.
2. Alasdair MacIntyre: The Tragedy of Speed and Isolation
The moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre sees intellectual fragmentation not merely as an academic problem, but as a moral and existential catastrophe. He points out that the temporal organization of university education has become subject to the logic of speed and pragmatism, in which students are expected to acquire skills in the shortest possible time, without being given sufficient opportunity to ask fundamental questions that go beyond the curriculum.
MacIntyre argues that the real challenge is to help people formulate the right questions, rather than providing quick answers to superficial ones. He gives the example of classical Marxists, who did not invent labor movements, but went to where workers were and helped them formulate their questions.
Today, however, excessive specialization prevents this kind of vital interaction and turns universities into factories producing isolated “skills” disconnected from any vision of life.
3. Joseph Stiefel and Others: Toward an Integrative Philosophy
Researcher Joseph Stiefel describes the contemporary crisis as one of “hyper-specialization and disciplinary solipsism,” in which each discipline behaves as though it lives in its own world, speaks a language that others cannot understand, and even ignores the urgent ethical and political questions confronting global society.
These thinkers call for what they describe as an “integrative philosophical practice,” based on:
· An epistemology of complexity that encourages dialogue between disciplines.
· A critical historical pedagogy that reconnects contemporary ideas with their traditional roots in order to evaluate their validity.
· A commitment to clarity and civic engagement rather than hiding behind complex terminology.
Third: Fragmentation as a Method for Avoiding Radical Solutions
What concerns us here is not merely describing this crisis, but revealing the political and economic function of this fragmentation:
· Dividing a crisis among disciplines means that a major problem—such as poverty, climate change, or civilizational conflict—is distributed across dozens of fields: economics addresses one aspect, psychology another, engineering another, and politics another. Each discipline offers a partial solution, but no one possesses the complete picture, and no one is responsible for the overall failure.
· Quick solutions for each individual part mean that the problem is managed rather than solved. Partial disciplinary solutions may temporarily alleviate symptoms, but they leave the root intact and sometimes even deepen it, because they do not address the fundamental questions: questions of justice, meaning, purpose, and power.
This is precisely what makes it a method that serves the financial elite, because it keeps the system intact, keeps problems investable, and postpones radical solutions—those that threaten established interests—indefinitely.
The specialized scholar does not possess the tools, the courage, or even the funding to ask the great question:
“How do we change the system as a whole?”
Fourth: Conclusion — Recovering the Lost Unity
It is a remarkable paradox that this method, presented in the name of “science” and “objectivity,” is in reality an escape from genuine science, because genuine science does not fragment a problem; it examines it within its natural, historical, and social context.
As the thinkers who criticize this approach point out: human beings cannot be reduced to cells, society cannot be reduced to mechanisms, and a crisis cannot be reduced to technologies.
The West’s greatest achievement in dividing crises is, in reality, one of its greatest failures, because it has produced a generation of intelligent researchers who are unable to see the forest because of the sheer number of trees. It has achieved astonishing solutions to small problems while the major problems continue to grow without resolution.
Therefore, any genuine renaissance, any genuine science, and any genuine liberation begins with the moment when we declare:
We do not want quick solutions to isolated parts of the crisis. We want a vision of the crisis as a whole, and a radical solution that begins with the fundamental questions, not with inherited assumptions.
