The Intellectual Between Construction and Destruction: A Reading of the Afflictions of Contemporary Thought – Mohammad Korani – The intellectual, in their essence, constitutes the “conscience of society” and the compass of its renaissance. Yet this very role has, in our era, transformed into an arena of epistemic and political contestation, where the intellectual is no longer merely a transmitter of knowledge but has become an influential agent in shaping collective consciousness—or in dismantling or distorting it. While much discussion of the “agent intellectual” has dominated political and media critique, a deeper and more insidious danger lies in other categories that do not bear the banner of overt betrayal, but rather practice the dissolution of societies from within under the guise of “scientific critique,” “academic objectivity,” and “freedom of thought.”
Based on this perspective, intellectuals can be classified into distinct levels—some who build, some who demolish loudly, and some who dissolve intellectual foundations in silence, their effects only felt when it is too late.

First: The Constructive Intellectuals (Positive Models)
1. The Serving Intellectual (Socially Engaged)
This is the intellectual who has turned knowledge and science into instruments for serving society and liberating it from ignorance, disease, and underdevelopment. They do not reside in an ivory tower; rather, they descend to the people, translating complex theories into accessible language and contributing to the resolution of everyday problems. This category represents an extension of Gramsci’s “organic intellectual,” organically connected to the issues of their community, contributing to its educational, health, and economic advancement. This is a desirable and commendable model, for it renders science a mercy rather than a curse.
2. The Neutral Specialist Intellectual
This is the scholar who dedicates their efforts to their precise specialization—be it theoretical physics, molecular medicine, or linguistics—without overstepping their boundaries into social, political, or religious issues for which they lack sufficient epistemic tools. This type respects the limits of knowledge and acknowledges its shortcomings, representing the backbone of genuine scientific progress. This is another positive model, as it preserves the purity of science from politicization and whims, and does not impose its philosophical views upon others under the pretext of “science.”
—
Second: The Agent Intellectual (The Overt Danger)
This is the intellectual who knowingly sells their pen and consciousness to external agendas, receiving funding and direction from foreign centers to distort the image of their homeland or to justify a particular cultural hegemony. This model is undeniably dangerous, yet its danger remains relatively contained, for they operate openly or semi-openly and are inevitably exposed sooner or later. Society is capable of identifying them and immunizing itself against them, for they bear the banner of explicit treachery. However, far more grievous and severe than this category are three other types that hide behind the masks of “scientific integrity,” “academic abstraction,” and “enlightenment critical discourse.”

Third: The Dangerous Intellectuals (More Perilous Than Agents)
These do not sell out their homeland—they sell out certitude itself. They infiltrate minds quietly; they do not merely contaminate logic, but reformulate the very rules of thought.
1. The Unwitting Transmitter of the Western Epistemic Model (The Culturally Subjugated)
This intellectual is a natural product of Western epistemic hegemony. They received their education in Western universities or in local institutions that replicate their curricula, and thus absorbed the “metaphysical underpinnings” of Western sciences without critical awareness. They do not merely transmit “scientific theories” (such as the theory of relativity, evolution, or deconstruction) as neutral knowledge; they carry with them the ontological and ethical frameworks latent within them—namely, epistemic relativism, the denial of the absolute, the reduction of truth to power relations, and the sanctification of excessive individualism.
What makes this type more dangerous than the agent is that they are sincerely devoted to their error; they believe they are transmitting “absolute truth” while in reality, they are transmitting a specific cultural model. They do not serve the West intentionally; rather, they serve it by stripping their society of independent intellectual tools, rendering it an epistemic subordinate that believes progress lies in emulating the West in all things, squandering its energy in disavowing its own civilizational heritage. This intellectual is the most dangerous “soft weapon,” for they strike the collective mind where it does not perceive, transforming local elites into mere echoes of the other’s thought.
2. The Destructive Skeptic Intellectual (Critic Without a Project)
This intellectual cares not for building alternatives; rather, they devote their life to dismantling every societal certainty. They deploy the tools of deconstructive critique and postmodernism to dissolve all religious, moral, historical, and national constants. They are not content with posing legitimate questions; they turn doubt itself into an end, elevating agnosticism to the status of the sole scientific method.
Their danger lies in inflicting upon society a “paralysis of collective will.” They cause the citizen to hesitate in their belonging to their nation, in their adherence to their religion, and in their trust in their history, offering no alternative anchor except emptiness. Whereas doubt in classical Western philosophy (such as Descartes) served as an entry point to constructing new certainty, this intellectual has turned doubt into a dead end. They practice something akin to “epistemological terrorism,” for they strip society of its ability to distinguish right from wrong, leaving it adrift on a surface of intellectual fluidity that settles on nothing.
3. The Divisive Intellectual (The Fabricator of Social Fracture)
This is the most cunning and the most lethal. They are not merely a skeptic; they are an eloquent orator, well-versed in the arts of rhetoric and debate, possessing a formidable capacity to seize upon the contentious margins within society—whether sectarian, ethnic, tribal, or class-based—and amplify them into central conflicts.
This intellectual starts from genuine issues, such as the demand for justice or equality, yet they wade deep into the sea of division, planting seeds of hatred among the components of society and transforming cultural diversity from a source of richness into an irreparable rift. They don the garb of the reformer and the free thinker, yet in truth, they work to fragment the national fabric into warring shards, rendering society fragile and vulnerable to external penetration. Their danger lies in the fact that they do not attack the “enemy”; they attack the “brother,” exploiting the deepest social wounds, making them more difficult to expose than others.
—
Why Are These Three More Dangerous Than the Agent?
Because the agent is known to everyone as an enemy, and thus society immunizes itself against them. But these three are embraced in universities, hosted in the media, awarded prizes, and described as an “enlightened elite.” They dismantle society while society celebrates them. The agent strikes from the outside, whereas these strike from within the epistemic system itself, corrupting the intellectual immune system of the nation. The agent’s betrayal is clear; but their betrayal of reason, homeland, and citizen is carried out under the banner of “scientific neutrality,” “empirical methodology,” and “intellectual courage.”

Toward Reclaiming Constructive Criticism
This classification does not mean calling for the closure of the doors of critique or for entrenchment against Western sciences. Western empirical and human sciences possess immense achievements that cannot be ignored. What is required, however, is an intellectual of a “fourth type”—a beneficial one: the insightful critical intellectual, who engages with the West epistemically without subjugation, benefits from its critical methodologies without dissolving their identity, practices doubt as an entry point to building new certainty, and contributes to addressing social fracture through awareness, not incitement.
The renaissance of any society is not achieved by expelling intellectuals, but by classifying and evaluating them, supporting their constructive members, exposing the resentful and divisive ones, and educating the public on the mechanisms of conscious reception. The Arab mind does not need guardianship; it needs authentic critical tools that emerge from the depths of its civilization, benefiting from the world without dissolving into it. Only then can technology and science be transformed from destructive chaos into a true mill of construction.
