Laboring Toward Your Lord Until You Meet Him

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:

«O human being! Indeed, you are laboring toward your Lord with great labor, and you shall meet Him.» [Surah Al-Inshiqaq: 6]

You, O human being, are on a perpetual journey toward Allah. Every breath you draw and every day that passes brings you closer to that Meeting. But the question is not: Will you arrive? Rather, it is: To what rank will you arrive? And what will you lose if you settle for the absolute bare minimum of what you can achieve?

In the worldview of Islamic metaphysics, existence consists of realms and degrees, and the journey toward Allah is not a spatial movement, but an elevation in existence, knowledge, and perfection. Whenever the soul ascends from one realm to another, truths, spiritual insights, divine lights, and bliss are unveiled to it that it could not comprehend at a lower plane. Any halt will inevitably be followed by a fall—and the higher the station, the more thunderous the descent. Therefore, halting during this spiritual ascension is impossible.

In the realm of physical manifestation (Alam al-Mulk), your bliss may lie in obedience and righteous deeds. In the imaginal realm (Alam al-Mithal), forms and meanings corresponding to that degree are disclosed to you. In the celestial realm (Al-Malakut), knowledge and spiritual witnessing expand further. In the domain of supreme power (Al-Jabarut), the contemplation of ultimate meanings and realities intensifies, as the soul progresses step-by-step through the stations of proximity and perfection. These stations are not merely uniform steps, but rather represent the journey of ascension through the planes of existence.

Here lies the tragic loss to which a believer might pay no heed.

A person may enter Paradise through the mercy of Allah—even if after billions of years—yet entering Paradise does not mean they reached every level of perfection, closeness, and gnosis that they were capable of attaining. They may settle for the lowest stations of bliss while they had the capacity to strive for higher ranks; they may escape the Fire, yet failed to seek the loftiest degrees of proximity.

The difference between a person who made their entire life a continuous labor toward Allah and one who settled for the bare minimum of effort is not necessarily that one enters Paradise while the other does not. Rather, the difference lies in the vast horizons of knowledge, spiritual closeness, and divine grace unveiled to each.

For this reason, the Qur’an proclaims: «For the like of this let the workers work.» [Surah As-Saffat: 61]. Then comes the most severe warning: «By the Time! Indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.» [Surah Al-Asr: 1-3].

Loss is not merely failing to enter Paradise; loss is possessing a brief earthly life that could be transformed into eternal perfection, only to waste it in heedlessness—forfeiting ranks that one had the full potential to reach.

Therefore, do not say: “It is enough for me merely to survive.” Say: “I desire to reach the utmost limit of proximity possible.” Settle neither for the lowest degree of faith, nor the minimal amount of action, nor the most superficial level of knowledge.

You are laboring toward your Lord with continuous labor, and you shall inevitably meet Him. Make your meeting with Him the grandest journey of your existence, and make every single day a step toward a higher station of perfection. Time is passing, life is coming to a close, and the Meeting is at hand… Do not lose what you could have been in the presence of Allah.
